Frequently Asked Questions
Partner Dance Classes - Swing, Salsa
-
No, you do not need to sign up with a partner! We will rotate partners throughout the class so you have experience dancing with many different kinds of people. This builds solid lead/follow skills and also helps build the classroom community.
-
I will invite people to rotate partners in class. In my experience (and I've taught both couples-only classes and group classes), it enhances everybody's learning when people rotate. That being said, if you come for a date night, you can choose to stay together for the majority of class. I'll respect that! I may invite you to rotate towards the end of class. You can decide in the moment - you might be surprised!

Class series are offered at a significant discounted rate from a single, pop-up class. If you will miss only 1, then I think it is still worth it! There is also the option to schedule a private lesson to make up what you missed.

The convention in partner dancing is that the male-identifying person learns the "leader” part and the female-identifying person learns the "follow.” If you go out social dancing you will still find this is the case. However, I am very open to each person choosing which role they'd like to learn in class. I just recommend that you stick with what you choose for the duration of the series so you can learn. All identities are welcome in my classes and I use gender-neutral "lead/follow” language in class.
-
Absolutely! Partner dances have historically had defined and exaggerated cis-gender stereotypes. I use gender neutral "lead” "follow” language in my classes. Everyone who comes to my class is encouraged to choose whichever role they want to try, with an understanding that "the man leads” and "the woman follows” is still what predominates at social dances out in the world. And even that is changing. Check out this SALSA routine.

I'm an enthusiastic, present teacher. I pay attention to who is in the room and how I can best support everyone to grow each class. Classes are fun, and I set an uplifting tone no matter what style. I value balancing play and the right dose of challenge so that over time everyone grows. To me, every opportunity to dance is a gift to embrace and experience!
Dance Technique Classes - Modern, Samba, Jazz, Tap
-
Modern Dance is an all-levels class. It is open to those who have never taken any dance class before, to those returning to class after a long time away, to those who are more experienced and are looking for something different.
Tap & Jazz are continuing classes, so some experienced (ever if 20+ years ago) is recommended.

Modern Dance is a form that evolved out of the experimentation of a handful of (courageous) women who were searching for a way to use movement to express their inner world. Since its early evolution in the 1920's and 30's, it has branched into many interpretations and specific styles across the globe. I have been training in so many styles of modern dance since 2000. The Modern Dance class I'm offering now is a blend of all my influences, styles, and inspirations. We explore free form movement alongside training to both invite your body to explore and discover what it needs each moment, and also to train the body out of old movement habits and into new possibilities.
